Orlando Owoh: A Legendary Highlife Musician from Nigeria

Orlando Owoh was a renowned Nigerian highlife musician and band leader who left an indelible mark in the music world before his passing. Born as Oladipupo Owomoyela in Oyo state, Nigeria, Owoh was a member of the Yoruba ethnic group. His musical journey began in the early 1940s, according to some publications, although Nigeria's P.M. News has disputed this birthdate.

Owoh's life story is a testament to his progressive approach to music. He combined traditional Yoruba palm wine music with danceable guitar rhythms and a strong element of Trinidadian calypso, creating a unique sound that was both refreshing and enduring. Throughout his career, he led several popular bands, including the Omimah Band, the Young Kenneries, and the African Kenneries International.

Before the emergence of Juju and Fuji styles in Nigeria, highlife music was all the rage in West Africa.
