Downloading Cisco Switch 3750 IOS Image

When it comes to networking, having access to a lab environment can be incredibly useful for testing and practicing. In this article, we'll explore the process of downloading an IOS image for a Cisco switch, specifically the 3750 model.

I recently received a pile of 3750 switches from a friend, which I'm using to set up a lab environment for recertification with CCNP. However, when starting up these switches and connecting to them with a terminal program like PuTTY or TeraTerm, I found myself in the most basic software environment, just enough to execute a few basic commands.

Of course, before the company threw away these switches and routers, they wiped the memory of the configuration files and internetworking operating systems (IOS). This presented a challenge: how do you get an IOS loaded into the switches and routers?

After consulting several books and searching online, I found that uploading the IOS had to be done using the Xmodem protocol. The Cisco website has a wealth of information, but it can be difficult to find what you're looking for.

I did manage to find a helpful video on YouTube by Presley Wright, which explains the process in detail. According to the video, you need to make a directory with the same name as the image file in flash memory. For example, if your image file is called 'image1.bin', you would create a directory called 'image1' in flash.

Once you've created the directory, you can use the set command to change the baud rate of the console port from 9600 to 115200 baud. This allows you to connect to the switch and upload the IOS image using Xmodem protocol.
